Rhyme Anima+ Countdown
From shikishi posted to https://hypnosismic-anime.com/special/countdown/ (updated to day 11/Saito):
Takeuchi's comment: If you watch, you definitely won't go wrong! [T/N: He specifically uses a word referring to winning a legal case.]
Sakakihara's comment: I want you to enjoy it to the fullest! [T/N: Written as if Jyushi is saying it.]
Hayama's comment: Each moment [until the anime airs] seems like an eternity. Well, wait for it with anticipation!
Kuroda's comment: Watch it!
Kawanishi's comment: Prepare for it until the anime airs! [T/N: He specifically uses a word for lesson preparation.]
Iwasaki's comment: They're moving in the anime! Sasara-san and his pleasant companions!! Absolutely watch it!! [T/N: This last sentence is in the Kansai dialect.]
Ito's comment: It's thanks to everyone! Please watch the second season! [T/N: Ito uses a humble term for "please", in line with Doppo's business speak.]
Kijima's comment: I'm looking forward to when I can meet you again, kittens!
Hayami's comment: Please sincerely look forward to it!!
Nozuyama's comment: Please watch!! I beg you!! It'll be repaid double!!
Saito's comment: Everyone, relax and feel replete [when watching the anime]. [T/N: There were almost no resources on what まろまろ means in Japanese and English because it's written in an archaic style, so I had to make do with what I could figure out. I admit I got rather irrationally irritated at this word while doing so *sweatdrops*.]
(Note: This post will not be updated as the countdown continues.)

Sushio’s latest Kill la Kill fanart got me thinking.
[Image description: A sketch. Ryuko walks briskly, her hands in the pockets of her jacket. She smiles at Senketsu beside her, who appears to be very happy.]
See, Senketsu... doesn’t exactly get a ton of stuff like this. Kill la Kill animator doujin and Twitter accounts won’t include much content featuring him.
And that’s totally fine, of course! These are drawings the staff do for fun, and I completely understand if drawing Senketsu ain’t as fun as drawing human characters.
But I actually got the Kill la Kill Starter Book recently, which was originally sold at Comiket 84 and then included as a purchase bonus on Aniplex+:
[Image description: The cover of the Kill la Kill Starter Book. It's an illustration of Ryuko Matoi and Senketsu by Hiroyuki Imaishi. Ryuko stands, smiling, wearing an untransformed Senketsu and holding her Scissor Blade.]
And flipping through the book, I was reminded that while Senketsu may not get a lot of animator fanart, he does get some good official art.
Now, I dunno how "official" the Starter Book really is. (I mean, it was sold at Comiket originally, so maybe it’s more in the “animator fanart” category, but at the same time, it is also a product kind of featured on the official Kill la Kill site, and, like, the SSSS. Gridman Starter Book was sold on Trigger’s online shop....)
But if you do consider the starter book to be official merchandise, then Sachiko Yajima's piece is not only my favorite in the collection but one of my favorite pieces of official Kill la Kill art, period.
The image is very simple; it's an illustration of Ryuko holding her bag behind her, smiling down at Senketsu. It’s nothing elaborate, but its sweetness means the world to me. With Kill la Kill’s fast pace, we rarely get those quiet moments where these two are just happy together.
And there’s more good stuff where that came from! Here are some more of my favorite pieces of official/semi-official Kill la Kill artwork that feature Senketsu!
1. Hug
[Image description: Ryuko hugs Senketsu, naked, smiling. He looks up at her, his mouth around her arms. Sparkles surround them, implying that they're Synchronizing through the hug.]
First, the final Blu-ray/DVD cover, by Sushio (sushio_)! So sweet. This is what Kill la Kill ultimately wants you to take away from it.
The recently released Promare Blu-ray/DVD cover gave me flashbacks:
Two characters and a representation of their synchronized way of fighting together. My heart.
2. Waving Goodbye
[Image description: Three characters are pictured. On the top, Senketsu waves goodbye. Below them, Ryuko smiles in Senketsu-Kisaragi and waves goodbye, winking. At the bottom, Guts sleeps with a big snot bubble coming out of his nose.]
Then, also from the final Kill la Kill volume, the adorable side art by Mago (magodesu)! Ryuko and Senketsu happy in Senketsu-Kisaragi, and Senketsu waving goodbye? My heart. Again.
I love Ryuko's winking. Her hand covers Senketsu's right eye, she's closing her left... the symmetry....
3. Date
[Image descriptions: The first image depicts Ryuko in a yellow bikini, smiling as she holds Senketsu’s sleeves. The second image is of a figure designed after this image. The third and fourth images are cards made from this image, called “Swimsuit Ryuko” and “Senketsu’s Date with Ryuko.”]
And of course, I can't talk about favorite official Senketsu art without mentioning Akira Amemiya's "Senketsu's Date with Ryuko"! An illustration, two cards, a figure... this is one image they really want you to see. Kill la Kill is actually adorable.
4. Don’t Look...
[Image description: A double-sided dakimakura, with one side featuring Ryuko in Synchronized Senketsu and the other side featuring Satsuki in Overridden Junketsu. Ryuko looks bashful and tries to cover Senketsu's eye. Satsuki looks angry and ready to attack with her sword, Bakuzan.]
Next up, I don't think I'd call this a "fave" exactly; it breaks my heart. But I appreciate (?) that Senketsu is acknowledged in the semi-official dakimakura.
Ryuko and Senketsu were drawn by Shota Iwasaki (tarou2), and Satsuki and Junketsu were drawn by Mai Yoneyama (yonema).
5. Shocked
[Image description: Official Kill la Kill breast mousepads. There is one for Ryuko in Synchronized Senketsu and one for Satsuki in Overridden Junketsu. Both girls have their arms up. Ryuko looks bashful. Satsuki looks angry. Senketsu is shocked.]
On the same note, I could say similar things about these official mousepads found on Trigger's Kill la Kill site. Why is it that fanservice products pay more attention to Senketsu's character than a lot of discussion on the show? I cry.
6. Bath Time
[Image description: A figure. The description on the site reads, “This figure captures the Kill La Kill protagonist at an awkward time, as she's just getting out of a hot spring. Water drips down her body, and the only thing keeping her from being totally exposed is a tiny, soaked towel. While she looks shamed and demure, she still has a chance to take it out on you with severe prejudice. Her trusty Scissor Blade is just mere feet behind her, and Senketsu, her sentient uniform, is grasping onto her thigh, ready to help her suit up and unleash all her power towards any peeping toms foolish enough to sneak a peek.”]
And I’ve already talked up a storm about the bath figures, but to keep it short, let’s just say that I’m glad Senketsu is included because he wants to cover Ryuko and prevent any creeps from peeping on her. And also Synchronize with her so they can take out the creeps together. He is drinking all the Respect Women Juice.
7. Stickers!
[Image description: Ryuko and Senketsu stickers sold in Trigger's online shop. There's a sticker of Ryuko in her tracksuit wearing scarf!Senketsu. There's a sticker of Ryuko in untransformed Senketsu. There's a sticker of Senketsu posing and a sticker of Ryuko posing. There's also a plain sticker of Senketsu looking forward.]
But on the more adorable side, these stickers by Sushio! The artwork is from SUSHIO CLUB LOVE LOVE KLKL, which has tons of cute Kill la Kill content. Of all the stickers from the book sold in Trigger's shop, these are the only ones sold out....
8. Dressing Up
[Image description: Senketsu has become a red dress, and his eye and eyepatch are integrated into a ruffled design. Ryuko wears two red bracelets on her left wrist, red lipstick, and brown boots. She has her jacket slung over her shoulder, and her hair is styled with a clip.]
Another Sushio piece, Ryuko and Senketsu being fancy together! The art was done for an Aniplex display at AnimeJapan in 2014 and is also included in SUSHIO THE IDOL.
See that extra bit of red in Ryuko's hair? It implies they Synced to make that dress!
9. Bikini!Senketsu
[Image description: A sketch. Ryuko wears bikini!Senketsu and sandals.]
I also totally headcanon that Senketsu can transform into other outfits, and the official manga adaptation with art by Ryo Akizuki (akizuki072) includes a snippet of Ryuko in bikini!Senketsu in the third volume! The full image (above) was posted on Twitter.
10. Nendoroid Love
[Image description: Chaos. Aikuro sits at a table and has a huge glass of wine. Next to him, Tsumugu cleans... something? Shiro scowls at Houka, who has perhaps taken Mako's laptop, as its adorned with a bunny image. Mako opens a fridge; a chicken comes out. Satsuki has her arms around a horde of Nendos of her, Ryuko, and Mako. Nonon and Uzu are scowling in the back. Ryuko smiles at her Nendo.]
This next one is more minor, but Sushio's art for this Kill la Kill Radio CD just gets to me. Ryuko's admiring her Nendoroid... which features her and Senketsu. She's like, "We look so good together, don't we, Sen?"
Idk, I think it's cute....
11. Into the Stars
[Image description: My photo of the “ambiguous” and “Sirius” album art. Both are star themed. For the “ambiguous” art, Ryuko smiles in Synchronized Senketsu, up in the stars. Below her, Satsuki, Soroi, and the Elite Four (with Mako on Ira's shoulders, looking up in awe) watch. For “Sirius,” Ryuko and Senketsu shoot up towards the stars. The Mankanshoku family try to run after them, their arms outstretched, but can't keep up.]
And on the topic of CD art, the "ambiguous" and "Sirius" album art by Sushio are adorable! My photo isn't great, but I get so emotional at Ryuko and Senketsu flying up into the stars together. Nobody can keep up with them. They are on a whole 'nother level. So precious.
12. OT3
[Image description: Ryuko, Senketsu, and Mako hold each other, posing for the camera.]
For this next one, a WonderGOO purchase bonus for the Kill la Kill game drawn by Kengo Saito (kengo1212), I know Senketsu is often ignored. But I was so happy to see him acknowledged and posing for a photo with his loved ones. So cute. I bought this bonus!
13. I Don’t Think He’s Her Dad...
[Image description: A poster of Ryuko transforming with Senketsu. She is naked, her eyes shut as strands of Senketsu's fabric wrap around her.]
For another poster, by Sushio (thank you for confirming, @dont-lose-your-edge!), I wouldn't say Senketsu is characterized exactly, but I think it's one of the most sensual pieces of official Kill la Kill art. It really makes the “Senketsu is/is like Ryuko’s dad” reading very implausible to me....
14. Best Box
[Image description: An image of the All the Anime Collector's box. The right side has the Kill la Kill logo, the left side has art of Ryuko and Satsuki looking at each other, and the spine has Ryuko hugging Senketsu. The three volumes that All the Anime sold the series in can be placed inside the box.]
I don't have much else, but since I love that final volume cover art so much, I have to say that I so appreciate All the Anime for placing it on the spine of their collector's box.
That is what Kill la Kill is all about, y'all. Not fighting. Not fanservice. Shirt friendship.

COSTUMES
Class 1-A works on coming up with their first hero costumes for school.
Word count: 913
“Alright, class. Today’s hero studies period will be set aside for you to come up with your costume designs. If your skills allow you to, you can sketch out what you have in mind… or you can just write out a description of what you’d like. We’re partnered with some of the biggest costume companies in Japan, so once we have your costume requests, we’ll send them off to have them made,” Ushiwaka-sensei said at the start of fourth period. Once he was finished talking, the class began brainstorming and talking amongst themselves about how to design their first “official” hero costume. Oboro approached Meiya’s desk as she dug through her backpack. “Yeah, yeah, I know, Obo, I’m trying to find it,” she said before he even spoke, pulling out a sketchbook from her bag and beginning to thumb through the pages.
She found the page she was looking for in her book and carefully ripped it out before giving it to her friend, who was patiently waiting with his elbows on her desk. “Thank you, m’lady,” he said, bowing before her. “Oh, wait, let me make one more change,” she said, taking the sheet back from him and sketching something on it with her pencil. Aizawa, who had the assigned seat next to Mei, watched the two interact at the next desk over and noticed her sketching. The sheet had a well-drawn sketch of a figure wearing an outfit, and she was now adding onto it. “What do you think now?” Mei asked Obo. “IT’S PERFECT!” he replied. Hizashi from the other side of Aizawa noticed the conversation going on and joined in. “Woah, you already finished your costume??” Hizashi asked as he saw the sketch in Obo’s hand.
Obo nodded excitedly. “Yep!! Mei and I have been planning to be heroes since middle school, so we already had in mind what we wanted for our costumes!” he answered, showing off Mei’s sketch of his costume. “Whatcha guys think?? Pretty slick, huh? I came up with like 75% of it, but Mei filled in the gaps and brought my ideas to life! I was thinking about what would be practical with my quirk, so I figured I should definitely wear a jacket, because it can be windy when I fly on my cloud… OH! And Mei came up with this cool logo thingy for me to add onto my jacket… for aesthetic purposes of course” he bragged as she blushed embarrassedly. “They probably aren’t interested in hearing the life story behind your costume,” she retorted.
“MEI!! Can you help me with my costume?! I have no artistic skills, so I wouldn’t even begin to know how to draw out my idea!” Hizashi said to Mei. She continued to blush, not used to having all this attention on her. “Oooo yeah, Mei! Help Hizashi out!! Maybe you could help Aizawa out too!” Oboro added. Mei looked at the boy next to her who simply said, “no thanks.” “Y’know… you seem like an independent dude… but maybe you should see what it’s like getting help from friends!” Obo suggested. “Don’t pressure him! You’re probably annoying him,” Mei replied defensively as she got up from her seat and went over to Hizashi’s desk with her sketchbook to help him get his ideas down to paper. Aizawa sighed in relief, thankful that his classmate helped in getting Shirakumo off his case, and he began to write down what he wanted for his costume.
A couple days later, the costumes were completed by the companies and were now in the hands of each of the students. They all got dressed, figuring out how to put them on and what all the accessories did before heading out to the training area for hero class. “Mei!! Look how good I look in your costume!!” Obo said as soon as Mei appeared on the training grounds. “I wish you wouldn’t give me the credit! It was mostly your idea!” she said to her friend. One-by-one the rest of the students showed up, talking about each other’s costumes. Mei ended up helping a good amount of the class with their costumes, so many of them were thanking her for putting their ideas to paper. The “mean girl” of the class, Iwasaki, noticed Mei getting all the attention and was starting to feel envious of her.
“Y’know, Amiyagi, if you used all the time you spent on other people’s costumes, you probably could’ve come up with an exciting costume for yourself,” she said, looking at Mei’s simple costume and making sure some of their other classmates were listening in. Mei shrugged. “Don’t know why you’re jealous of a girl with a simple costume then,” she retorted before walking away. She walked over to Hizashi and Obo, where Aizawa was standing a bit away by himself, listening in. “Woah, girlfriend!! I didn’t know you had that kind of sass in you!” Hizashi commented as she approached. “Well then it’s obvious you still don’t know our Mei very well yet. She may be a cinnamon roll, but she’s also often like a snapping turtle… seemingly harmless until you mess with her… then she’ll snap at you,” Obo said as Mei rolled her eyes and Shota smirked to himself.

[Translation] Myojo 2018-11 Autumn Fashion (original scan: yoshiko-mama@LJ)
Understanding Their Fashion Situation | Autumn Styling BATTLE!!
Sakuma Ryuto’s Fashion Situation [Closet By Color] 45% Black, 45% White, 10% Other. “I don’t have a lot brightly colored items. The most colorful one I have is a blue green top, but it’s dark toned.” [Regular Shopping Buddy] Inoue Mizuki. “When it’s the two of us, we end up checking out a lot of places. We go to the stores Mizuki-kun wants to go.” [Senpai Who Recently Gifted You Something] Watanabe Shota. “I’ve only received something from Shota-kun. I still remember it, it’s a t-shirt with an image of sunglasses hanging off of it.” [Ideal Couples’ Match With Your Girlfriend] Matching colors. “Rather than have matching items, I think having matching colors is better. If hat’s the case, matching from head to toe is OK too!”
Hashimoto Ryo’s Fashion Situation [Closet By Color] 60% Black, 30% White, 10% Other. “I have one pale pink top.” [Regular Shopping Buddy] Matsuo Tatsuru, Kanno Taiki. “These two invite me to come along. If it were just me, I have no desire to go shopping.” [Senpai Who Recently Gifted You Something] Shimekake Ryuya. “I have a lot of them, but Shime-chan recently gave me a black tote bag. I told him I wanted it, and he gave me it to me right there♪ I’m using it today, too!” [Ideal Couples’ Match With Your Girlfriend] Parka. “But, there aren’t any that aren’t just a plain black or white, huh.”
Inoue Mizuki’s Fashion Situation [Closet By Color] 60% Black, 30% White, 10% Other. “The ‘Other’ is grey (lol). The brightest thing I own is one (1) yellow piece.” [Regular Shopping Buddy] Iwasaki Taisho. “We both work fast. Whenever we want to go shopping, we’re the friends who ask each other.” [Senpai Who Recently Gifted You Something] Morita Myuto. “I bugged him about it for two years, and I got a racing jacket and a bag! I’m so grateful, I have received a lot from many others.” [Ideal Couples’ Match With Your Girlfriend] Wristwatches. “I think it’s too much to go out and be in an Obvious Couples Outfit so I’d rather go with the casual accessory (lol).”
Takahashi Yuto’s Fashion Situation [Closet By Color] 30% Black, 50% White, 10% Other. “100% Patterned (lol). I don’t own a single solid item. When I wear something plain or solid, it’s borrowed from my little brother.” [Regular Shopping Buddy] Suetake Yukihiro. “I’ve been going shopping on my own recently, but I do go with Suetake a lot. The shop I’ve been frequenting lately is the shop Suetake took me to before. [Senpai Who Recently Gifted You Something] Yasui Kentaro, Jesse. “It wasn’t recent, but Ken-chan has gifted me things, but I remember the bracelet the most. I was bugging him about it as a symbol of how close we got through doing Rajira together… and he gave it to me! Jesse-kun gave me a t-shirt when we did the Shonentachi stage show together.” [Ideal Couples’ Match With Your Girlfriend] With accessories. “How about a ring? Of course, it would be a present from me♥”
Igari Soya’s Fashion Situation [Closet By Color] >50% Black, 30% White, 10% Blue, 5% Red, 5% Other. [Regular Shopping Buddy] Sakuma Ryuto, Matsui Minato, Inoue Mizuki. “I’m usually alone, but since I hang out with Saku-chan and Matsui a lot, we end up going shopping, too. With Mizuki-kun, we’re often synced up on when we want to go.” [Senpai Who Recently Gifted You Something] Hirano Sho. “I got a black fur coat. It’s really warm and stylish—I wear it regularly! (Iwahashi) Genki-kun, Shimekake (Ryuya)-kun, Jesse-kun… I can’t list them all, there are so many generous senpai!” [Ideal Couples’ Match With Your Girlfriend] T-shirt. “But, only when wearing an outwear piece. Looks best if the matching t-shirt just peeks out.”

M I Z U K I > In a photoshoot for MYOJO last year, there were these glen plaid underpants, and I saw them again at another location afterwards. I thought they were fated so I decided to buy them from the stylist (lol). Last year, I was really into wearing shorts and vests for a school uniform-ish look. This autumn, I want to try challenge myself with coordinating with monotone tops. > I’m the type of person who immediately decides to buy something the moment I see it—with the price being the only thing potentially holding me back. The other day, I was strolling through Takeshita Street in Harajuku with Sakuma and Hashimocchan. I bought a Coach jacket from a store we passed by. It’s black, and I like the design with the word “STREET” written in white all over the sleeve. It was cheap so the decision was easy! Now if I can find aa white chesterfield coat I’ve been looking for since last year, then it’ll be perfect.
S O Y A > It’s part of my routine to pick out the outfit I’ll wear that day the moment I wake up. But, since I’m indecisive af, I’d have second thoughts while I”m eating breakfast and change my outfit completely. I’d leave the house, change my mind again, and turn back around. Because of all the changes, my parents ask tell me to decide the moment I wake up, but they don’t get it. Picking out my outfits is fun, even the indecisive part♪ > Last autumn, I bought a knit sweater that looked similar to a happi. Since it wasn’t an item available in Japan, I ordered it based on the model’s pictures they had online, but when it came, it was way too big on me (lol). It looked so good online… When I got it last year, autumn was over, and it was too thin of an item to wear in the winter. I had to wear a knitted turtleneck underneath. I’ll wear it at the start of autumn this year—the lead role this time!
R Y U T O > I love wearing t-shirts with funny illustrations like the one I’m wearing today. Even in my personal wardrobe, I have many similar shirts. My favorite is an illustration of a tonkatsu set meal. It’s so cute, the tonkatsu was drawn with a face. It was love at first sight the moment I saw it! Unfortunately, I currently don’t have the courage to wear that t-shirt when I’m out. But, after today, I might be able to do it if I pair it with a long coat like this (lol). > I have a problem with styling myself the same way! Or rather, it’s frustrating that I can only style myself one way… black skinny jeans with a t-shirt… is my go-to. I also came here today like that. I have four pairs of black skinny jeans. Not to mention, they’re all the same brand and style. I’ve also gotten interested in ripped jeans… but when I start thinking the level of ripped looks good, I have no clue (lol).
Y U T O > For a show project, I saw Sakurai (Sho)-kun wear this super flashy outfit and i wanted to try and replicate that outfit! For me, I think it’s a pretty good replication. I’m wearing it, but that necklace is super heavy! And of course the fanny pack. It’s looks shiny, but it’s actually a clear material and you can see inside it. It looks to be in style, but I have no idea what to put in it. And most importantly, the hat. First time I wore a taller one, I kept hitting everything (lol). The white top I’m wearing underneath is close to my personal style … is what I would like to say, but I I have no confidence in wearing solids. I like patterns so I would buy the leopard print shirt (lol). > Lately, I’ve been understanding fashion less and less. I feel like I should be able to wear whatever. To be honest, I want to wear the sweats I wear during lessons out in the streets~ Is that bad!?
R Y O > I’m awful at the layered look. On cold days, I can’t stand just the layers; only warm days, I can’t take it off right away… so that’s why, I only wear a jacket. It’s not something I would pick out myself, but I like this look so I wanted to try it. My wardrobe is all black and white so this navy is a fresh look♪ > Most of my shopping has been done online as of late. It’s not that I don’t have time to go shopping, it’s just simply easier. But, I had a big fail when I bought these harem pants that looked really cool on the Internet… They were just different from what I had in mind. In the end, I haven’t worn them once… But, I really like the sweats I bought recently! It’s a set with a top and bottom in light blue that stands out from everyone else♪ I wear them lots during stage show lessons.

May 16, 2012 The Daily Pennsylvanian published an article titled “Some religious organizations on campus show ‘darker side'” (April 5, 2012). This report included information about Rev. Moon’s Unification Church (UC), commonly called the “Moonies”, which is now using a new name “Lovin’ Life Ministries”.
Leaders of the controversial church, which has often been called a “cult”, disliked the Daily Pennsylvanian article and ultimately demanded that it be retracted and removed from the newspaper’s Web site. The Ivy League publication established in 1885 caved in to the pressure and pulled the story. The student newspaper explained this was “due to a combination of factual and editing errors.”
Crescentia DeGoede, the local Philadelphia leader of a UC linked organization called the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP), crowed about the results she achieved through her meeting with Daily Pennsylvanian staff. CARP is the UC organization commonly associated with proselytizing at college and university campuses.
DeGoede’s accomplishment was also reported by Dan Fefferman, the president of the so-called “International Coalition for Religious Freedom”, which has been characterized as a UC “front group”. (http://www.tparents.org/Library/Unification/Talks/Feffermn/Fefferman-120427.pdf)
Rev. Sun Myung Moon According to full page ads paid for by Moon, which were run in newspapers across the United States during 2002, religious leaders in “Spirit World” had a meeting to confer special heavenly status upon him. Those assembled included Martin Luther, Karl Marx, Confucius, Jesus and God in a meeting during Christmas the previous year. And they unanimously decided that Moon is the “Savior, Messiah and King of Kings of all humanity.”
Moon also can be quite outspoken about his distaste for certain minorities. In one speech he called for a global government with him in charge and said that once empowered, he’d cleanse the world of gays, who he referred to as “dung-eating dogs”, which should be eradicated through a “purge on God’s orders.” Does this seem somewhat similar to the rants and megalomania attributed to Charles Manson, Jim Jones or David Koresh?
Rev. Moon also was criminally convicted of tax fraud [including document forgery]. He served a sentence in federal prison. And despite numerous appeals that conviction was never overturned or pardoned.
Moon’s former daughter-in-law Nansook Hong says, “Father [Rev. Moon] demonstrated contempt for civil law every time he accepted a paper bag full of untraceable, undeclared cash collected from true believers”. She adds, “There was no question inside the church that the Reverend Moon used his religious tax exemption as a tool for financial gain in the business world.” And that “Personally, the Moons had an almost physical aversion to paying taxes. Lawyers for the church spent most of their time trying to figure out how to avoid them. That’s why the True Family Trust fund was based not in a U.S. bank but in an account in Liechtenstein.”
Imagine how hard it must have been for the editors at the Daily Pennsylvanian to sit down with and defer to the demands of Moon’s church.
The Daily Pennsylvanian deal Fefferman announced that the Daily Pennsylvanian had “promised” to do the following: 1. Publish in their next issue at least a few of ANY letters to the editor our members submit to the Daily Pennsylvanian before Wednesday, April 25th.
2. Publish a revised version of the “Darker Side” article on the Internet, in which they will correct their use of the terms Moonie and deprogramming¦The original version of the article will cease to be available after this revision has been made.
3. Publish a notification of the revision to the “Darker Side” article in print, directing readers to read the revised article online.
4. Publish a follow-up article featuring our contemporary movement in Philadelphia.
5. Communicate and consult with us each step of the way.
6. Read any quotes they intend to use from interviews with our membership to us before they publish them, upon our request.
7. Meet with Dr. Dunning [the professor who was misquoted by them in the original article] to understand his point of view and take corrective action for the misdeeds against him. They will also be encouraging him to write a letter to the editor, which they intend to publish.
The Daily Pennsylvanian has apparently complied with each and every UC demand. The subsequent article published by the Daily Pennsylvanian titled “Creating a new generation of the Unification Church” reads like a “puff piece” based upon a UC press release filled with propaganda, rather than a legitimate news story.
“High pressure tactics” and “brainwashing”
In this revisionist version concerns about cults are spun by an apologist into when “families feel…robbed of their children”, but children feel that “their families” are “being irrational and not letting them choose their religion the way they want to.”
“Choosing their religion the way they want to”?
The original the Daily Pennsylvanian article squelched by UC leaders reported about the “high pressure tactics” used by campus religious groups to recruit Penn students.
The New Zealand Herald reported about a speech made by Moon and published in 2004 on the Unification Church website. Moon said his followers “must cast aside their friends and teachers, even their parents, and follow the True Parents” (meaning Moon and his wife).
“Humanity must mercilessly eradicate all bonds and relationships with the satanic world, not showing even the slightest attachment, and in this way return to the zero point and mark the dawning of a new creation,” Moon added.
Some might even observe that Moon’s goal of reaching “zero point” seems like a cryptic allusion to the net result of what has been called “brainwashing”.
In fact, the UC has been “convicted of brainwashing” in Japanese courts.
Of course according to Pastor Iwasaki Shota, supervisor of Lovin’ Life Ministries in Delaware and Pennsylvania, who is quoted in the newly revised article published by the Daily Pennsylvanian, this reflects a “situation in Japan”. He sees this as something like a conspiracy, which includes a “whole operation of media, government and police working on the side of the deprogrammers”. Shoto urges students “to work with Congress and ministers in the U.S. to help the situation in Japan.”
However, to better understand the background concerning UC problems in Japan read this “Joint Declaration Concerning the Moon Organization” (September 26, 1997).
A former member that grew up in the UC told NPR, “Everything was a system of control…That’s what it seemed to me like. They were kind of breeding us to be a certain way. And if you weren’t that way, there was something wrong with you.”
Moon’s own daughter doesn’t necessarily disagree. “Those of us – myself included – who were born into this movement or born into this family, we had no choice in the matter”, In Jin Moon told NPR.
Another former UC member told NPR, “If you left the church, you fell off the face of the earth…It’s the worst thing you could do. One person told us at Sunday school once, that blessed children who fall out of the church go to a box underneath of hell.”
For more details about what it’s like to grow up in the UC read “Growing up with the Moonies”.
Information control The Daily Pennsylvanian deal also included making sure that no copy of the offending article remained online.
DeGoede told the Unification Church Newsletter, “The executive editor of the Daily Pennsylvanian told me by phone that she has ordered former deprogrammer Rick Ross to remove the Daily Pennsylvanian article from his website, and he has said he will comply in a couple of days.”
The article as it was originally written had been archived at the Ross Institute Internet Archives (RI) within the Unification Church subsection.
After the Daily Pennsylvanian editor called the previously published article was converted to a news summary, which remains intact within the RI archives.
Apparently encouraged by their success with the Daily Pennsylvanian UC leaders thought they might try another news outlet in their ongoing effort at information control.
RI received an email and registered letter from National Public Radio (NPR) about another archived news report titled “Unification Church Woos a Second Generation” (February 17, 2010). NPR requested that this article be removed from the RI archives.
The article was then converted to a news summary, which remains intact within the RI archives.
Why did UC leaders take such an interest in the articles archived at RI? This probably occurred because both the NPR report and the Daily Pennsylvanian article prominently mention a new name now being used by the UC in North America — “Lovin’ Life Ministries”.
It is relatively easy to find out that “Lovin’ Life Ministries” was really just another name the UC is using to potentially recruit unwary college students.
Historically, deceptive recruitment tactics have been a frequent focus of complaints about Rev. Moon and his church.
Moon has used literally hundreds of names to promote himself, his agenda and/or pursuits over the years. This name game can be seen as an attempt to obscure the past and/or avoid all the bad press linked to Moon and his Unification Church.
The hateful “M word” Rev. Moon’s followers now revile as “pejorative” the label “Moonie”, which they once considered a “badge of honor” in the 1970s. Today the “M word” is categorized by the US as “hate language”
It also seems that any criticism of the Unification Church is likely to be labeled “hate language” by UC leaders.
But just last week a British newspaper the Daily Mail noted that “Moonie cult leader Sun Myung Moon” has the dubious distinction of being banned from entering Britain. He shares that honor with Louis Farrakhan and the American white supremacist Dennis Mahon.
Spin control? Fefferman, a devoted disciple of Moon for decades is looking forward to participating at the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA) annual conference in Montreal. He will present a paper titled “Are ICSA, Info-Cult, and the Unification movement ready for mutual dialogue?”
There will also be a panel discussion at the ICSA conference in July titled “Ethics, activism against, and dialogue with cultic groups” moderated by longtime cult apologist Eileen Barker.
Ms. Barker once received $25,000 from Rev. Moon to help fund her book “The Making of a Moonie” (published 1984). In her book Barker generally minimized the damage done by the UC. Rev. Moon apparently got his money’s worth. Now it seems Barker may yet again yield further dividends. ICSA’s website confirmed the planned event.
Eileen Barker was also once named prominently by fellow cult apologist Jeffrey Hadden in a memo he prepared proposing a plan to counteract the American Family Foundation, which is now known as ICSA. Hadden queried “whether it might be possible for the UC in collaboration with several other NRMs [new religious movements sometimes called “cults”] to raise a significant amount of money that could go–no strings attached–to an independent group, which in turn, would entertain proposals and fund research on NRMs.”
Can cultic groups really change and become ethical new religious movements? Can Rev. Moon and the UC be trusted or is this all just contrived spin control?
Nansook Hong once remarked, “They [the Moons and UC] have orchestrated a remarkably successful campaign to win respectability and wield political influence. As usual, they have succeeded by deceitful means.”
Family business If and when groups called “cults” do genuinely change this is typically precipitated by a dramatic shift in leadership. And if such a group wants to implement real accountability this is most often demonstrated through democratic reforms and meaningful financial transparency.
However, the UC appears to be run more like a family business than a legitimate church organization. There appears to be no meaningful accountability for UC leaders, except to Rev. Moon.
But Moon is 92, so it won’t be long now until his children begin carving up his multi-billion dollar business and spiritual empire.
The church remains essentially a family business ruled over by a hereditary dynasty.
All that appears to be happening is an old Moon is being eclipsed by new Moons.
